well as there didn't seem to be a scan probing section i thought i should write a version for everyone to mull over.
list of items you will need
1 covert ops.
2x gravity capacitor upgrades (rigs makes time go quicker)
1 scan probe launcher (sisters of eve = awesome timing)
1 stack of patience
lots of probes depending upon which type you are doing depends on the probes you use.
the difference between scanning for a person and scanning for exploration sites is not that much it has the same principle you need to cover the system with scan probes.
the easiest way is as such for example, i want to scan a system for exploration sites.
i find the system jump in and warp to a planet, i then open the solar system map (f10 then the solar system tab top right corner and cor ain't that pretty it looks all nice.
then you drop a multi spectral probe to see if there is something in the system with you, lets say there is.
i warp to the furthest point away and drop a probe i then open up my system scanning map and select cosmic signature, ( in this list you will also see ships etc for scanning for ships you need to select that's right you guessed it ships)i then drop my first probe and then warp to the next planet in the list,
now to save probes i then hold ctrl and left click on the probe that i just dropped it then shows up with a nice bubble round it showing its range, now am i in range of it? yes i am ok i need to warp to another planet that is not in range of the bubble.
after doing this and dropping probes (quests have the longest ranges) at all the planets i notice that the system now looks like this on my solar system map.

then i make sure i have selected everything via the ctrl left click interface and hit analyse now time is not overly important but persistance is, the more times it says is not found then keep going the harder it is to locate the better it is normally until you have a positive signal.
at this point adreniline kicks in you could have found anything it could be 1 mills worth or it could be worth tons its the unknown factor that is the best bit.
so we found our first signal now what you ask well now what you do is the following. you warp to it by right clicking the new thing that just popped up and warp to now if its at 0m which is unusual then warp to it at 100 but be careful sometimes these will decloak you.
we shall assume it has not done this but has dropped you within 1 au of the target your looking at grab the next probe down normally comb (i think)
drop it right where you are and hit the analyse button. 60+ seconds later ding hello final moment.

(if you still don't get it then keep trying if you get within .5 au of the site then use the smallest probe obviously information on the size is listed in the info on the probes.)
