No, they aren't. The problem is that people want ships that they can just activate all the mods and not use their brains. MWD's give a group of AF's a shit ton more options than AB's will. You know, there are times when you'll be orbiting really fucking close WITH THE MWD ОFF AND NOT GETTING SHOT. HOLY FUCK WHY DOES THIS SHIT HAVE TO BE EXPLAINED TO PEOPLE.

To answer your question.

Оnе of the strongest things about this style of fleet/setup is it's overall maneuverability. The nano-oni has to keep range in pretty much every fight except the wtf gank. This means on average it's 50+km away. One of the main dangers for the nano-oni is other nano ships (vaga mainly). As the vaga burns out for the nano-oni that means the af's need to burn out after it. A MWD allows that to happen where as AB doesn't.
