August PL tech report - Solving killboard & forum lag during peaks
So you might've noticed we run a bit slow during peaks.
This has a few known causes. Mainly cause we seem to keep growing, we get more and more killboard views and our database grows every month (new kills, new pilots, many more items).
Previously the KB would read data from killboard over and over causing SQL load to soar through the roof.
This has been partially solved by caching sql querie result-set to disk cache for killboard. We could use memcached or similar, but this method was chosen for portability and simplicity.
Currently the bottlenecks are with the web frontend since we moved the SQL query result to the webfrontend. When we get a huge influx of visitors our memory demand go up since a lot of the dataset is still read per visitor. The system is a virtual machine with about 8GB ram total (although half assigned to web frontend, rest assigned to other services. During peak the memory commit requested value goes up to 20GB or more. Mainly cause webbserver still need to serve all killmails and results (PHP takes a lot of RAM to read all SQL results from disk or DB).
We've thought of running the killboard separately on a non SSL enabled host to enable varnish or similar. This is a longterm project and will rely on us separating some killboard features that are tightly mixed with forum and authentication. Killmail posting, API and other stuff.
What have been done:
- All physical hosts are interconnected with separate gigabit interface (bought a new passthrough module for the bladeserver).
- Оur wеb frontend also has gigabit connectivity to internet.
- Killboard SQL result set caching to disk and RAM.
- New SAN ordered (waiting for delivery).
I've just bought us a SAN (storage area network) where I will move IO demanding services such as SQL.
- Added new physical server.
What will be done:
- Buy more disks for SAN once it arrives - this will be expensive. Dont worry - I'll cover most out of my own pocket‚ but donations are always welcome. SAN will be used for other stuff too, I cant motivate it economically otherwise by having company fund a large portion of it.
- Upgrade physical systems with more RAM to allow more ram for virtual systems.
- Lab work with moving some of our virtual machines around on the physical machines to even load with RAM/CPU.
If you arent able to donate monies, I will always welcome donations of hardware:
- ECC RAM such as PC2-5300 240-PIN DDR2 667MHz Fully Buffered DIMM for our servers.
- SAS drives 2.5" drives, SSD drives or similar (more storage space).
