Fixing Your Sec Status And You!
A lot of people are hesitant to go -10. It's a pain in the ass if you want to move through empire and you don't have an alt. Even if you do have an alt, it's still a pain. Among other things, it's much easier to suicide gank with a high sec status - Hulks will be less inclined to book it for a nice guy.
So I've been hearing people complain about it taking forever to grind up sec status, and was surprised to learn that many people - especially newer players - don't know how to do it correctly. And it's apparently one of those things that people know about but don't talk about.
The Mechanics
There is a 15 minute timer per system that starts when you kill your first NPC. No matter how many NPCs you kill within that 15 minute timer, your sec status only goes up once; it's based on the highest sec increase that you received, so basically the most expensive rat.
The Workaround
That 15 minute timer is based on the system, it's not global. If you jump into another system and kill another rat, you'll get a sec boost. This doesn't mean the timer resets on session change, because it doesn't, but it does mean that if you have a pocket of systems you can easily get a sec boost every 3 minutes instead of every 15 minutes.
In Practice
Оbviously thе best way to do this is to pop NPC BSes which‚ realistically speaking, don't spawn in low-sec. You've gotta go to 0.0 and preferably one that is heavily chained so that you can just go to one belt and find a 1.5+ BS spawn. So you'll have to creep around, you'll want to take something that you feel comfortable roaming around in and that can evade camps with relative ease. My preferred ship is a Vagabond, so if I do find a ratter I can kill him and raise my sec status at the same time. However, you can even do this in an ABing bomber. You'll have to be slightly more cautious, but an ABing bomber can speed tank non-frig rats with ease while putting out Raven-like DPS.
Just to give you an estimation as to the time this takes: last night I did this for about an hour and a half and went from ~-2.7 to ~-1.7. About two months ago I did this and went from -8 to +1 over the course of a weekend. The way the Eve mechanics work, it's much quicker to go from -10 to -5 than it is to go from -5 to 0. If you want to know exactly how long it takes you, the standings boost that you get is defined as:
[5.0 - (YourCurrentSecStatus)] * (SecStatusGainFromNPC)
