UPDATED: The IRC Access button is renamed to Services Access! // Ander, 2010-02-21
Some of you may have noticed the new button in the bar at the top of the page. Thanks to the countless hours of hard work invested by Maz, Ander and Bombasy and in no small part to your donations for keeping our servers running, we have an in-house IRC server.
Why the change? Coldfront was never meant to be a permanent network, originally it was just a room to include people from other corps as ОSHIT had almost always usеd IRC. Soon after‚ it began to grow into something more of an out-of-game meeting place for people to idle in while at work or playing other games. With this, we saw increased use for fleet broadcasts, discussions of what we're doing or planning on and so forth. Because of the insecure nature of Coldfront and your connections to it, a change was needed.
The new server is about as secure as IRC can be made, and it's easier to use than Coldfront too. All of your access is based off of your forum account. Several changes have been made with the usergroup structure of the forum to make this possible. More will be coming along soon as well so we can add additional channels for things like capital and supercapital pilots.
Things to note: You will be forcejoined to two channels when you log in. #minusten is for general chat, it's basically what #pl on coldfront is.
#pl-announce is a channel for FCs and Admins to broadcast important announcements, if you see someone speak in there, it's probably relevant to your interests.
Here's how to do it.
Download an IRC client (if you don't have one already).
- The easiest to use are mIRC and Pidgin. You can download them here: mIRC / Pidgin
A suggestion for linux / shell accounts is to use "irssi".
With mIRC you'll need the SSL plugin located here.
Secondly, you need to create an IRC account, it's pretty simple.
- Click the "IRC access" on the title bar, and follow the instructions:

If you're using mIRC, make sure you download the SSL plugin. You need it to access the server. Go to File -> Select Server and input the following details:

If you want to connect to another server using the same mIRC client, you can add the following script under Tools -> Scripts Editor -> Remote
on *:START: {
server irc.pandemic-legion.com:+6666 yourpasswordhere
server -m irc.coldfront.net
}
If you're using Pidgin, go to Accounts -> Manage Accounts and do the following:

If you use Irssi, do the following:
/set nick EXACTUSERNAME
/set real_name EXACTUSERNAME
/set user_name EXACTUSERNAME
/connect -SSL irc.pandemic-legion.com 6666 YОURPASSԜORD
